The FIP Montreal Declaration on non-communicable diseases
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) remain the leading cause of death and disability worldwide, placing a growing and disproportionate burden on individuals, health systems and societies. These challenges are further compounded by ageing populations, multimorbidity, and widening health inequities, including in fragile, conflict-affected and humanitarian settings where access and continuity of care are often disrupted.
As one of the most accessible health professions globally, pharmacists play a critical role across the continuum of NCD prevention, management and care. Their contributions span health promotion and disease prevention, early identification and screening, medicines optimisation, treatment adherence, self-care support and long-term management within primary health care systems.
In response to this global health priority and building on the commitments outlined in the 2025 United Nations Political Declaration on NCDs and mental health and well-being, the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) is developing the FIP Montreal Declaration on the role of pharmacists in non-communicable diseases.
The declaration articulates a comprehensive, integrated and people-centred vision for strengthening the contribution of pharmacists to NCD prevention and care. It highlights the actions needed to enable pharmacists to contribute fully to improving health outcomes, advancing universal health coverage, and strengthening resilient, equitable and sustainable health systems.
The Declaration will be officially launched during the congress plenary session on 31 August 2026 at the FIP Congress in Montreal (FIP World Congress 2026).
