Getting to Budapest

By Plane

The Budapest airport is Ferenc Liszt International Airport, formerly known as Budapest Ferihegy International Airport and still commonly called Ferihegy. It is located 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) east-southeast of the centre of Budapest and was renamed in honor of the most famous Hungarian composer Franz Liszt (Hungarian Liszt Ferenc) on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of his birth.

All passenger flights arrive to and depart from Terminal 2. For individual arrival/departure information visit the official website of Budapest Airport. The website has a very good route planner application for finding airlines that service Budapest airport.

Taxi

The journey takes between half an hour and an hour by car. The official contractor of the Budapest Airport is the Főtaxi. You can order a cab at their desk in the airport for fixed and reasonable prices. Or if you order a cab by phone, most companies offer a fixed price of around 3 800–6 500 HUF, depending on whether your destination is on the Pest or Buda side of the river. Although rare these days, be aware that there is a risk of being overcharged by unscrupulous drivers if you simply hail a taxi. Where possible, always telephone to order a cab and agree a fare for the journey in advance.

As the official contractor of the Budapest Airport, Főtaxi’s offers several hundred cars, trained and experienced drivers and ensure a safe ride at a high standard. All cars are equipped with a POS terminal therefore accepting credit cards.  Reservations can be made in person at the Főtaxi booths located at the exits at Terminals 2A and 2B. Or go to the taxi rank in front of the stands where taxis are parked continuously waiting for passengers.

As of September 1, 2013, a new Taxi Decree was introduced in Hungary regulating the price of the taxis at a fixed tariff of 280 HUF/Km (0.95 EUR/Km) in addition to the one-off fee of 450 HUF (1.50 EUR) and waiting fee. A ride to the city center should typically cost around 6500 HUF (22 EUR) depending on traffic conditions. For additional information, visit www.bud.hu/english/passengers/access_and_parking/by_taxi
