EMEA positive opinion for azacitidine

The European Medicines Agency’s (EMEA) Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) adopted positive opinions for Vidaza (azacitidine), from Celgene Europe Ltd, for the treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes and acute myeloid leukaemia in adults who are not eligible for haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation. Vidaza is the 50th orphan medicine to receive a positive opinion by the CHMP.

The CHMP gave positive opinions for applications for extension of indication, adding new treatment options for Erbitux (cetuximab), from Merck KGaA, to extend the indication to the treatment of patients with squamous cell cancer of the head and neck in combination with platinum-based chemotherapy for recurrent and/or metastatic disease.

Over the last decade, WHO's activities in the field of medicines have been guided by the WHO Medicines Strategies for 2000-2003 and 2004-2007. Based on these good experiences and to ensure a strong foundation for the 'new' Department of Essential Medicines and Pharmaceutical Policies, WHO has decided to develop a third Medicines Strategy to formulate strategic approaches within the scope of WHO's Medium Term Strategic Plan for 2008-2013.
