Update from #CAPhOCon18

By Melanie Danilak

The Canadian Association of Pharmacy in Oncology (CAPhO) Conference was held in Ottawa-Gatineau, Quebec, Canada from May 3-6, 2018.  The theme for this year’s conference was “Better Together”.

For the first time, conference participants had the opportunity to also register for a Drug Interactions Workshop before the conference. Spots filled up fast and participants had great things to say about the experience. The hands-on approach to dealing with common drug interaction issues in oncology patients was an excellent way to connect with colleagues nationally and collaborate on common pharmacy practice issues.

There was something for everyone at this conference, including talks to inform oncology pharmacy practice, communication and patient care, scientific drug information, and medication safety.  Not surprisingly, current hot topics in oncology such as medical cannabis and the opioid crisis were addressed.  Conference attendees had the opportunity to hear from experts in the oncology pharmacy field as well as patients who have experienced battling cancer themselves.  Participants shared ideas and knowledge through round table discussions and research posters.

Conference participants left feeling informed, inspired, and looking forward to the next meeting in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2019!
